ST (10-4-09)

Thanks to Chinky for sending this in. This is actually the reason I am so reluctant to take my cats over to the US considering that I might be heading back to Singapore! Some of my cats are elderly and I really don't want to subject them to a long quarantine - plus of course they would be indoor only cats here.

Are these regulations valid? Is there room for change?

I think the idea is to keep rabies out of Singapore. To be fair, the US does have rabies - but if your cat is an indoor cat, and has the vaccine, I don't see an issue.

Can the cats be sent to HK from USA and then to Singapore to bypass the strict regulations?
I think some Japanese bypass Japan's strict requirement (not surprising, based on their almost OCD attitude towards hygiene)by sending the cats to HK or Taiwan before landing in Japan.

I believe the only countries exempt at the UK, New Zealand and Australia.
