ST (2-9-09)

Here's a letter from Mr Tan Tuan Khoon that I can agree with. It's something that we've been advocating and talking to the vets about since I was with CWS (and on this blog and on the predecessor to this blog). Perhaps Mr Tan may not be not aware that not all the vets are comfortable doing early age spay-neuter or more caregivers and pet owners would be happy to do it. There have been caregivers who have worked with vets to get cats sterilised before four to six months (which is normally done here).

Mr Tan may also be unaware that there are already people reporting animals abandoned but that it is very difficult to prosecute and find proof of this. You must for example have witnessed the animal being dumped - and obviously, you'd be hard pressed to find someone actually abandon an animal where others can see it. It's mostly done somewhere remote or in the middle of the night.

Let's hope that Mr Tan has a change of heart. Since he obviously advocates sterilisation (and early age sterilisation too), then let's hope that he actively walks the talk.

Is that the same TTK? I don't believe in a change of heart. How to change when there was no evidence of a TTK "heart"?

Anonymous 5:13pm - That's a damn GOOD one!
But seriously,..we can only hope the notorious TKK has seen the light...

EJ - yes exactly. Mr Tan obviously has a lot of energy and hopefully he can channel it to something more useful like sterilisation (or even advocating sterilisation and NOT killing).

Anonymous - perhaps it's not just a change of heart (though I'd be happy if it was). Perhaps it's also because Mr Tan can see that killing the cats isn't working. Clearly if he has sent in cats for this many years and there are still cats in his neighbourhood, that killing isn't a solution.

after stray cats are spayed and returned to their original place and managed. do they mean manage as in ensure that they are fed or what? what if nobody feeds them? do the cat welfare do anything about it?

A proper TNRM programme is carried out only in areas where there are committed caregivers. That means people like you, or anyone else who cares for the cats, and usually who lives in the vicinity will go down every day and not only feed them, but monitor their health AND help deal with any issues that may crop up in the neighbourhood. They can help neighbours that have any related issues.

Most people won't sterilise a cat unless they are already feeding/caring/managing the colony, though there are some people who sterilise and leave the feeding/management to someone else.

Nope, he's still bullshiting. See his latest posting on the forum page. He's spouting the same old "if you love cats take them all home". If you ask me, this is just another weak attempt to make himself look more benevolent, a form of self-justification if you will. This kind of person is absolutely hopeless to argue with.

That did cross my mind but I am still hoping he'll have a change of mind. It's not only about being inhumane. It's also logically inconsistent to to do the same thing over and over if you know it doesn't work as your issues aren't solved.

He's a typical stubborn old man. There will always be negative people like him who will thwart our efforts. Hope he changes his outlook someday *wishful*.
