Pardoned turkeys

It's Thanksgiving in the US today and here's a funny tradition that is celebrated every year - a turkey gets pardoned and not eaten!

I thought the term "pardon" applies to people who are forgiven for their illegal deeds. The turkeys obviously haven't done anything wrong, and the use of the term makes the presidents sound magnanimous. (Most people would say that they are not). Ditto the term "reprieve".

Perhaps one shd ask for "pardon" if one is partaking of the turkey & thus causing its death ;)
I better not start or someone will quote from Genesis ;(
