Olympics today

The Olympics start today - and the news isn't very promising for the cats as I mentioned in an earlier blog post. No one is still exactly sure what is happening to the cats though one hopes that at least when the Olympics are over that they will be left alone. For that alone, I hope the Olympics hurry up and end already.

yah man, tell me about it. so sickening. i happened to witness on tv last night, the amount of fireworks and scale of resources put in for showing off and i cannot help thinking what a mere fraction of these monies can help suffering and abused animals in their country alone. all the visual elaboration to a point of utter nonsence, if you ask me. what about the thousands of worst abused bears in chinese bile farms for the last many many decades ago? why haven't they do away with these barbaric shit? the skinning of live animals? the crazed eating of dogs and cats? sigh, so much of misplaced pride. frankly, i sincerely felt like i wanted to spit.

The best thing to do is to boycott this year's Olympics.

actually i thot the opening was spectacular, i was even moved to tears when LiNing was hoisted up and running in space. It should be a proud moment for all, especially Asians.
Yes, we all knew how inhumane and cruel China government had been for decades to animals. Not looking for any further insights here, we should also try to understand that are many other factors that may have caused this, if it were not for their ignorant supportive citizens believing everything the government says-cats spreading disease leading to abandonment, if it were not for their ever craving for catmeat on their tables etc..
Boycotting China or the Olympics can never be a solution. Perhaps the Animal Welfare Groups in China should promote more awareness to their public.
Only when the citizens unite, the government will listen.
Let us see whether consequence exist over time. For now, most importantly, is that the welfare groups do not allow such acts to take away what they have worked so hard to earn, continue their negotiations with the government bodies, promote educational programmes and so on.

Till that day comes, I will surely be moved to tears, tears of joy that finally worldwide recognition and respect to animals rights. For now I can only continue to do what I can to the cats under my care, making sure every step i make will count towards the day OUR government opens our HDB doors to our furry friends.

K makes a good point - act local, think global. I do know that welfare groups ARE working in China though, but it's difficult for them. Not only is there ignorance (present in every country) but the authorities aren't supportive either.

I do agree that in a country China's size there are special challenges, and also there is a cultural divide. For example, I think that for some Chinese (and by no means all) and perhaps for the authorities, getting rid of the cats IS being hospitable and making the place nice and clean for tourists who come during the Olympics.

Dawn, if you change the C to S, it works too except the last line.

Hi Apple, I understand where you're coming from. On tormented days, how i wish i know nothing about how much abuse, cruelty and pain has been inflicted to the animals. But i would like to encourage you (and to constantly encourage myself too) to do whatever and however we can in our capacity as individuals to help the animals. Of course we are not as rich as bill gates or donald trump (i wish i am!), i am not even half as rich as many of my high-earning fellow countrymen but let's take the courageous step to do what we can. knowing that however little, it is still going to make the difference! irritating folks like to jeer at me and say things like, "how many cats can you help? there are hundreds and thousands out there. you help this one, who's going to help the other one?". Well, this is not untrue but this is totally negative and crippling. if we help one animal, then one animal receives help. if we help 2, 2 receives help. this must encourage us to help the 3rd and the 4th, the 5th and on and on and on. this is where the meaning is and what animal-loving is all about. there is AnimalsAsia which we can help to help the very very sad moonbears in China and Vietnam as well as the dogs and cats in China. (www.animalsasia.org) Nearer to home, there is cat welfare society, animal lovers league, spca, action for singapore dogs, acres, mettacats and others. The animals need us more than ever, let's be strong and encouraged!
