Injured cat put down

Some of you may have read about the cat that was found yesterday with injuries that made the owner suspect abuse (thanks E_Cat for the heads up too). The poor cat was put down - the SPCA vet has said that they are unable to ascertain if it is abuse, or if the cat got into an accident or fell from a height.

It is always safer to keep your cat in and safe in your flat. Outdoors, especially if it is wandering around within the block, it is subject to possible abuse and accidents. I would venture to guess that pet cats let out to roam are probably MOST at risk - community cats that live in the open downstairs have a better chance of running and hiding, but it would be more difficult for a cat caught on a high floor of a HDB block to get away because it is more enclosed.

Yes, i agree and i do not understand why many cat-owners do not fully fathom the risks of letting their pet cats out to wander. They can get lost, get injured, get nabbed. My neighbour like to let his 2 cats sit outside the house when he's home but we've had at least 3 "rescue operations" when he could not find either one of the cat that has wandered off and we would go floor by floor with him searching for his cat.

Poor cat - one wonders why he doesn't just keep it in!

Well Jules just have a look at this link and you will understand why.

adriane - sigh. So if there was a pedophile running around the area, these people would presumably let their children run around to allow them their freedom and wait to catch it on tape?

yes that is why I stopped trying to explain anything. Im aeskywan in the forum. Its really pointless I feel.... All the advice to keep your cat in is met with dumb remarks like 'cats are protected by law"

I mean after the cat has died, so what if you went to court, got the fellow charged, sentenced? Just to prove that "cats are protected by law" and your cat is DEAD..... Even if the guy is sentenced to death, your cat cannot come back from the dead...

sigh cannot understand their mindset..

To add.... its people like this that dont want to keep their cats in, let them wander and maintain it is their right as pet owners to let their cats wander and their cat's "natural" right to wander that give ammo to HDB's arguement that cats are nomadic by nature and cannot be rein in. I mean if the owners wouldn't rein their cats in then how will HDB not fear that HDB estates will be overrun by cats if cats are legalised in HDB.

And these pet cats endanger every other cat in the community as every cat gets blamed for the actions of one cat.

Recently I spoke with a Malay family who let their two cats roam free and one of them ran along the parapet to another Malay flat that frightened the owners. A complaint lodged with the TC resulted in two "wrong" cats caught. Fortunately they were released based on a MOU between caregivers and TC. However when the caregivers spoke with the Malay owners to keep their cats in with meshing, the wife was reluctant and said a shocking statement that "if the cats were caught, then that's it lah!" Perhaps it has to do with the caregivers "spoiling" such irreponsible owners by footing the bill and transporting these cats to the vet for sterilisation. The cats were found to be pregnant by the vet! even thought the owners declared they "NEVER" roam out! Yet if the caregivers didnot take such action, the downstairs cats, all sterilised, would be in danger!

Adriane - thanks for trying at least.

Anonymous - it is a shame that irresponsible people exist. And caregivers are caught in a bind either way as you said.

Its not a shame.... its literally a blood vomiting experience talking to these people.. the worse part is that majority of them think they are right and worse feel that if their cats have the right to wander wherever they want, they will be protected from abuse by the law.... I mean it doesn't take an idiot to understand the theory of me an human coming into your house uninvited.. sit on your couch, help myself to drinks in your kitchen and then take a piss in your toliet. You will charge me for trespassing right??? So is it not the same for a cat??? My goodness... it's really not rocket science to understand something so simple! But yet we have more and more people writing in to say dumb remarks like Cats cannot be jailed...

I'm not even sure that they can't understand - it's that they don't want to change what they are doing, and are looking to blame someone else if something DOES happen.

Yes, my neighbour thinks he's being kind by letting them "have some fresh air" when he's at home. *Shake head* My cats never leave the house and are perfectly happy! And yeah, i hate it when families let their cats wander downstairs, annoy other neighbours, get complained about and implicate the other community cats as well...
