ST (6-2-08)

Nice letter in the Straits Time online forum today about how killing cats is not a solution. The only thing I disagree with is that education is the key. Especially after reading Nathan Winograd's book, I feel more strongly than ever that we have the keys to save more cats right now and that education doesn't do very much (as Winograd said, millions has been spent on education over many years and nothing has shown that it is working).

I say practical education should include making the kids volunteer some time at SPCA and other animal shelters during their school hols! But of course, this will almost never come true... Wishing u & your family a prosperous and blessed Lunar New Year.

I think the best education that children get is when their parents set a good example. The problem is that it's usually the parents who set the standard and it's hard for schools or anyone else to counter that when their parents are their biggest influence, especially when they're younger.

I agree that action needs to be taken right now..government taking on the role of sterilisation! plus education as well.

What needs to be done is to have humane policies, no point giving education talks and staging public roadshows. Strays continue to multiply and die at killing facilities. Sterilise first then all the fanciful talk can come later.
