Frank waiting for food

Frank waiting for food, originally uploaded by dawnkua.

I was at a friend's house today - and this is her cat waiting for his dinner (you can see the bowl on his right) :) He would poke at her when she took too long with the food. This got my friend and I talking about the various ways your cats tell you that it's time to eat. How does your cat remind you that you've forgotten feeding time?

well, all my cats have different ways of reminding me if i missed their mealtime by a single minute :9 My calico make sure I see her everywhere i go, she jump on tables and run around. My ginger try to trip me by rubbing himself against my leg. My longhair cat jump on my lap. My white cat make sure i hear her meows everywhere i go. The most strange i think would be my black cat touching my mouth with his paws everytime he is hungry.

So Dawn, how are you reminded? :)

Our elegant Jerri would scream her lungs out at 6am so you know that it's chow time. Subtle Bagherra would stand in front of your face and will you to wake up with her feline powers. The others would mill around with soft meows.
Generally you don't get a chance to "forget" cats' meals because that's the only time some cats are actually awake!

Different cats different tactics - I like to read before I sleep and one of my cats knows the best way to wake me up is to scratch on my books. If it's a coffee table book all the better because I'll wake up faster. Plus she likes to throw things off the table. Spoilt - I know.

My cat Ocean will meow in the morning to wake me up. Even if my hubby woke up before me, I will still need to give him some food or Ocean won't feel like there's closure?? Not sure why but I think to him, his food is my responsibility and his potty is my hubby's responsibility :)

For dinner he's always covered coz' we use the food tray as we always get home late from work. Funnily he will give us a naggy meow as if to tell us that he's not happy that we get home late from work. My hubby will make it up to him by giving him body massage for at least half an hour :)

When the alarm goes off in the morning for me to wake up to get ready for work, all 3 cats in house will be very excited because to them, alarm clock = breakfast time! If I way up a bit later, the bed will look like safari with cats lying around waiting to be feed. The cow cat will gnaw my leg/arm if I make me wait for too long, the plump white cat will walk on me and meow loudly, the little orange patches has the best stunt - lick me with her scratchy little tongue. When I get up, there’ll follow me everywhere, rub my legs, meow loudly and try to trip me, until breakfast is served.

In the evenings, the cow cat will sometimes just sit in the darkness of the kitchen, face the cat bowl and wait. Sometimes he will scratch the newspaper lining the cat bowls very loudly, to cover the leftovers from the previous meal and making a big mess - he will overturn the cat bowl and the water bowl, and shred lots of newspaper. Sometimes that’s not enough, he has to drag the kitchen rag to cover the whole pile. The white one will be noisy walking to and fro from me to the kitchen, touching the packet of kibbles with his little paws… the little one just bite the packet of kibbles - she has decide to open it herself.

Other times they attach the bin in the kitchen, scratch and chew the sofa or have a salad first, out of the pot of fern.

Talk about cats idiosyncrasies. My male cat always meow loudly whenever he finishes his pee n poo, as if to tell us "quick, clear the litter box. I'm done."

Hi Dawn,
One of my cats has the habit of pushing thing off the table and watching it fall too ?! I’ve seen him do I and I see a mixture of glee+ curiosity + amusement +mischief when he does that. Naughty, naughty :)

We use the auto food tray almost everyday now so Ocean hardly gets angry with us when it comes to his chow time ;)

There can never be enough of cat stories :-) For food requests, my different cats will do either one of the following : (1) howl loudly, pace to and fro, rub our legs and try to trip us to our deaths, (2) look pleadingly into our eyes and meow piteously, (3) nip my ankle/foot/shin/back of shin, (4) swipe at our legs, (5) sit and stare silently at us for a loooong time, (6) stand up and bump our hands with his head (7) makes funny "rrr" sounds :o)

In case i've forgotten the way to the cat food bin, my cats "walk" me there - in case i get lost.

Then the top cat would sit on the table to fend the others off so i would have a easy time filling the bowls without a thousand whiskers in the way.

By the time i turn around, they would be sitting in their own little space all ready to tuck in.

It is the same everyday ; )

I like how every cat has a different way of 'reminding' you it's food time. My cats have a buddy system too sometimes - if the aggressive throwing things off approach doesn't work, then the second cat comes into play with the soft, plaintive meowing. It always works.
